How to avoid resume writing scams

We’re aware that there are many resume writing scams in operation. We have worked with multiple clients who have tried these services only to end up wasting time and money.

Because we frequently get calls from clients who – having been let down by others in the industry – are skeptical to try again, we wanted to summarize what you should look for in a quality service.

There are many benefits to working with a resume writer.

However, resume writing is just like any other industry: you’ll inevitably come across some bad apples.

Just as you’ll find highly competent accountants, lawyers, dentists, or personal trainers, you’ll find others who are simply in it for the money and don’t deliver a quality service.

When selecting a resume writer, be sure to conduct your research! It’s not that difficult to set up a website and call yourself a resume writer.

As you browse websites of professional resume writing services, you should consider the following:

1) How much do resume writers charge?

Pricing for resume writing can vary quite dramatically. You’ll find services that charge anywhere from $100 to over $2,000.

Resume writing can be a sizable investment, but you generally get what you pay for.

We know that one large firm charging around $150 for a resume outsources work abroad to non-native English speakers. We have received multiple job applications from their writers that we turned down.

Is that something you would be comfortable with?

As we explain in this article, we put a significant amount of time into understanding your background and crafting your document.

The work put into your project is equivalent to at least a full working day, consisting of:

  • reviewing your initial documents
  • a one-on-one phone consultation
  • outside research
  • writing
  • a follow-up call (if needed)
  • revisions

Unless companies charging in the $150 range somehow manage to condense our thorough writing process into just a few hours, they’re inevitably cutting corners (via outsourcing, automation, or rushing through your document).

To put it into perspective, if you invest $150, you’re essentially hiring someone to write a document that can have a substantial impact on your career at the approximate hourly rate of a cake decorator at Costco (assuming 8-10 hours devoted to your project). We love Costco cakes, but you see where we’re going!

2) Is the company credentialed?

At a bare minimum, the company you choose to work with should be a member of the Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches.

PARW/CC is the leading global association for the resume writing industry, and its members need to pass a thorough exam to ensure they understand and apply industry best practices.

3) What do the company’s reviews say?

Before investing in a resume writing service, you should read through the company’s reviews and testimonials.

What have previous clients said about the service they received?

While trustworthy resume writers shouldn’t guarantee results (as there are so many factors out of our control that come into play), how do previous clients generally fare with their documents?

Here’s a small sampling of the results we have been able to drive for our clients, as shared via unsolicited emails:

I wanted to personally thank you for your service.

I wouldn’t say I was the easiest of customers, deadlines and quiet periods, but you have been brilliant.

Always prompt, the CV and profile look a world away from where they were. I can’t thank you enough!

I will always recommend you moving forward.

- Director, Cybersecurity

You did a great job, and I would be happy to serve as a reference.  Thanks again for all your help.

- Chief Scientific Officer, Biotechnology

I received a lot of interviews for many different hospitals, which led to multiple job offers afterwards.

I decided to accept the offer at (redacted) Hospital... they only made offers to less than 2% off all the applicants that do apply.

I really appreciate your help!

- Manager, Hospital Administration

You were such a help with all the applications. I got one of the jobs I was applying for!! Thank you so much again.

- Law Student

At first glance, the CV and cover letter are excellent! I'm very impressed. You clearly are an expert at what you do.

- Head of Customer Experience, eCommerce

Everything looks great! I really appreciate your work here. I've already gotten 3 interviews.

- Senior Manager, Digital Marketing

Thank you once again for the resume - I got my first job soon after you created it. I am really enjoying it!
