As many of our previous clients have noted, there are clear benefits to working with a resume writer.
However, resume writing is just like any other industry: you’ll inevitably come across some bad apples.
Just as you’ll find highly competent accountants, lawyers, dentists, or personal trainers, you’ll find others who are simply in it for the money and don’t deliver a quality service.
We are aware that there are many low-quality resume writing services in operation and have worked with multiple clients who have tried these services, only to end up wasting time and money.
Because we frequently get calls from clients who – having been let down by others in the industry – are skeptical to try again, we wanted to summarize what you should look for in a quality service.
When selecting a resume writer, be sure to conduct your research! It’s not that difficult to set up a website and call yourself a resume writer.
As you browse websites of professional resume writing services, you should consider the following:
1) How much do resume writers charge?
Pricing for resume writing can vary quite dramatically. You’ll find services that charge anywhere from $100 to over $1,000.
Resume writing can be a sizable investment, but you generally get what you pay for.
We know that one large firm that charges in the $150 range for a resume, for example, outsources work abroad to non-native English speakers. We have received multiple job applications from their writers that we turned down.

The work put into your project is equivalent to at least a full working day, consisting of:
- reviewing your initial documents
- a one-on-one phone consultation
- outside research
- a follow-up call (if needed)
Simply put, companies charging under $200 frequently cut corners via outsourcing, automation, or rushing through your document in order to remain profitable.
2) Is the company qualified?
At a bare minimum, the company you choose to hire should be a member of the Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches.
