Let Recruiters Know You're Open to New Opportunities

How to Let Recruiters Know You're in the Job Market While Keeping Your Search Discreet

If you're actively seeking a new role or curious about what's out there, make sure to let recruiters know!

In this article, we discuss:

  1. How to enable the "looking for job opportunities" function
  2. How to keep your search discreet

How to Enable the Open to Opportunities Feature

LinkedIn makes it very easy to tell recruiters you're open to new opportunities right from your home page.

To adjust this setting, simply log in and click "get started" as shown below.

If you don't see this box underneath your headline, you can access the setting by selecting "add profile section" and clicking "intro."

You'll then be able to add job preferences so that you appear in relevant recruiter searches.

To maximize your chances of success, we encourage you to add multiple titles, job locations, and job types as shown below.

How to Keep Your Search Discreet

If you're currently employed, you'll likely want to hide the fact that you're exploring other opportunities from your current employers and colleagues.

By selecting the "only recruiters" option shown below (this is the default option), your profile will only be shown to LinkedIn Recruiter users.

LinkedIn to New Opportunities Privacy Settings

Generally speaking, this option should help keep your search under wraps.

However, note that this method isn't 100% effective.

As LinkedIn notes on its website, "To protect your privacy, we take steps to prevent LinkedIn Recruiter users who work at your company and related companies from seeing your shared career interests, but we can’t guarantee complete privacy."

That said, in some instances, it may be appropriate to let "all LinkedIn members" see that you are open to new opportunities.

You might choose to select this option if you are:

  • Currently unemployed
  • Looking for your first job out of college
  • In a contract role that is expiring
